The
Lowell's Boat Shop Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating
the public about a traditional American craft by preserving America's
oldest boatbuilding activity in its original workshop, the birthplace
of the fisherman's dory. The mission of the Lowell's Boat Shop Trust is:
- to preserve Lowell's Boat Shop, a national historic landmark, in Amesbury,
Massachusetts;
- to oversee the rehabilitation and renovation of the Boat Shop to provide
proper public access; to perpetuate the art and craft of wooden boatbuilding
by teaching and supporting the Boat Shop's adherence to traditional
designs, materials and methods, along with its high quality of workmanship;
- to provide educational programs in interpretive exhibits for the public;
- to raise an endowment to support the programs of the Trust.
The Lowell's Boat Shop Trust initially had management responsibility
for the boat shop after the purchase of the shop by the Trust for Public
lands. After the acquisition of the boat shop by the Newburyport Maritime
Society the trust has served as a support organization. The trustees raise
funds to provide financial support to the shop and volunteer their time
to assist in the operation of the shop. The Board of Advisors assists
the trustees in these efforts. Members of the Boat Shop Trust provide
financial support to the trust through their membership fees and annual
gifts. They receive periodic updates on activities at the shop and invitations
to member events. Members of the trust are entitled to the same rights
and privileges as members of the Newburyport Maritime Society.
Lowell's Boat Shop Trust is a major supporter of the Boat Shop through
its annual donations to NMS. These donations, funded through memberships,
grants and individual gifts to the Trust, are restricted for use in the
operation and preservation of the Boat Shop. Lowell's Boat Shop Trust
volunteers contribute time and expertise in the development of educational
programs and boat building activities for middle and high school students
from the surrounding communities. The Lowell's Boat Shop Trust has made
contributions in excess of $100,000 for the support of the Boat Shop.
