Lowell Amesbury SkiffRugged, dry and easily driven
Over the past sixty years, Lowell Amesbury Skiffs have earned a reputation for being exceptionally stable, seaworthy, and rugged boats. They are an adaptation of the Surf Dory, initially developed for inboard power, now modified to take advantage of today's high-powered, lightweight outboard and outdrive engines. The hull is flat-bottomed with flared, rounded, lapstrake sides, making these boats surprisingly dry and easily driven. Since power requirements are lower than most boats of equivalent size and capacity, fuel requirements are low, an important consideration in today's world. They are used primarily for livery, commercial fishing, or rescue work. Standard seating consists of two after side seats and two thwartship seats, midships and forward. Work benches, gear lockers, trap davits, etc. are often installed. Steering and control consoles can be provided. Stern side seats and two thwartship seats are standard; forward decks or seat-lockers are optional. Mahogany planking for those wishing mahogany's superior resistance to marine borers and rot, more prevalent in warmer water, is available at additional cost. Lowell Amesbury Skiff specifications:
*Garboards on Amesbury Skiff's longer than 12' are ½" marine plywood. Standard models are now made with cedar planking, oak stem and frames, and mahogany transom, thwarts and details. Fastenings are copper rivets and silicon bronze ring nails and screws. Bottoms are encapsulated in west system epoxy with fiberglass cloth on the outside. Standard finish is three coats of quality marine enamel on the hull and interior, and five coats of varnish on rails, transom and thwarts. Two pairs of bronze oarlocks are included. Bronze bow eye, drain plug, brass half-oval rub strips, floor boards, boat cover and trailer are available. Standard features and finish can be customized which may either increase or lower the end cost. Unfinished boats are available at a substantially discounted price.
